The Golden Lion Tamarin

The golden lion tamarin is an endangered species that we have to save because it is an endemic species from Brazil which is part of a food chain, and it is also very beautiful.

It became endangered because humans have altered their habitat by chopping down trees. In 1995 there were approximately 500 tamarins living in the wild. 125 of them had been reintroduced or had been born from reintroduced individuals. These 125 monkeys lived in 26 groups.

Today thanks to the programs of reintroduction carried out by the zoos their population has gone up to 1000 individuals against 200 in 1970. It is estimated that the optimal capacity of reception of these supervised forests is reached.

We have to save the golden lion tamarins because without them the Brazilian forests would be very lonely. Reintroduction programs can be good to solve these problems, but it would be better to be more conscious and avoid causing problems.

Manolo.
